Prestwich rap back to make it woe for Roe
5:26pm Tuesday 27th July 2010
PRESTWICH demolished close rivals Roe Green on Sunday when they bulldozed them out for 48.
The Worsley outfit crumbled from 17-0 as pro Danny Jones and Phil Kyle wreaked havoc. Jones, back after a three-match absence, put his home club to the sword with a sparkling return of 6-24. Kyle took 3-12 off 11 overs.
The dramatic collapse came after Oliver Holt’s nimble catch off Kyle forced Kenyon’s departure for 12. Kyle then had Budgen brilliantly caught by Chris Thomas at point.
Thomas repeated the feat moments later when he clutched onto another rasper to see the back of Phil West, as Jones claimed his first scalp. Birch was yorked by Jones for three before Green pro Roberts was run out by Sam Holden.
At 20-5, a fightback was launched by Nick Bridgeford and Ashley Williams and it was another 25 runs before Kyle nudged back Williams’ middle stump. Jones was in full swing by now and bowled the last four batsmen for just one run.
Despite losing both openers, James Wharmby for eight and Jones for 18, Prestwich ambled to victory with 66 overs to spare – the five-point victory a welcome boost after they had narrowly lost at Flowery Field the previous day.
The Heys side found it tough going after the second ball loss of Thomas. Wharmby (16) and Holden (27) put together a 43-run partnership but were unable to capitalise and wickets tumbled as they tried to increase the run rate.
Gareth Barnes struck a fine 34 and, aided by a late flourish from Lewis Johnston (26no), took the score to a respectable 147-7.
Prestwich got off to a great start when opener Mistry was caught by wicketkeeper Barnes off Kyle’s first delivery. Teenager Nick Carter made an impression on his debut with a wicket in his first over, tempting Dodd to carve the ball into Kyle’s hands for 30.
With Tom Armstrong forming an all-spin attack, the run rate was shackled and the game became a tight affair with the result still in the balance when Flowery were on 133-7. But Prestwich had no further joy and Flowery pro Steve Oddy blasted a six for victory with three overs to spare.
Prestwich host to Irlam on Saturday, 1pm start.
