Stand find rhythm after rain

5:27pm Tuesday 27th July 2010

STUART Catterall and Matt Curphey shared in a formidable 166-run sixth-wicket partnership as Stand took their frustration out on an inexperienced Thornham side on Sunday.

Furious after being foiled by the rain the previous day when they felt robbed of victory at home to Dukinfield, Stand bounced back with a merciless 204-run victory.

Dave Taylor laid a solid foundation, hitting 71 in 54 balls, but the serious damage was done by Catterall, who hit an unbeaten 112, and Matt Curphey (69no) who came together at 135-5 and posted a mammoth 301-5.

Carl Sutcliffe and Matt Holt took three wickets apiece as Thornham were bowled out for 97.

Stand would have been celebrating a weekend double had the weather not stopped them in their tracks as they appared to be heading for a home victory over Dukinfield.

Amil Weththasinghe took 5-60 as Stand restricted the visitors to 119-7 in their rain-reduced innings of 46 overs, then batted patiently to launch a recovery from 7-2 to 51-3 at the halfway point.

Weththasinghe took 89 balls to reach his half-century and was still there on 54 when rain put a stop to proceedings with Stand on 93-4 with 12 overs remaining – a position from which they felt they could have comfortably won the game. But when the calculations were made, Dukinfield won the match by three runs.

Stand 2nd XI had a convincing win at Dukinfield on Saturday, successfully chasing the hosts’ 193 with Itchy Yahathugoda and OJ Beirne hitting half centuries in an eight-wicket win.

The following day they were were involved in the second tied game of the day at the SCG.

In the morning the Under-13’s tied with Prestwich 88 runs each and the afternoon’s play saw the seconds tied with Thornham 105. Beirne was again in the runs, top scoring with 47 while Jack Ritchie picked up 4-27.

On Saturday the first team travel to Woodbank with the seconds in action at the SCG.
